November Mama of the Month -Fall Color Maternity Session

This month's blog features an amazing Mama, Katie, with her second pregnancy. Katie felt she had struggled to find time for this pregnancy, whilst running after her toddler and so this was the perfect opportunity for some pampering time and self care. We started with a make up session before heading to Washington Arboretum to capture the gorgeous fall colors at the Woodland Garden.

My aim for this session was to try and capture the connection between Katie and her baby, whilst empathizing with her feelings of splitting her focus on the baby and her toddler. It was a great session from start to finish and I asked Katie

Tell me a little about yourself and why you decided to have children?

I'm a freelance illustrator, my husband works in video games. We have a 2 year old daughter and a corgi named Finn. Baby boy is due Christmas! I always knew I wanted to have kids as I was the youngest of 4 growing up but I was never confident in my ability to be a mom. Having my first was such a transformative experience and I was so surprised at how much I loved my new role in life that we decided to open our hearts to a second child.

What kind of look were you going for in your images and why?

I wanted to look like myself but a slightly more glamorous version. We were hoping for some fall colors to work with so we chose a purple dress that would pop against it.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to other expecting mothers thinking of booking a  session?

I would advise taking the opportunity to pamper yourself a bit before your shoot. Get some beauty rest, hydrate, do a face mask. Relaxing and preparing for the shoot was a great excuse for some self-care!

Is there anything you were self-conscious about going into the session? If so, what?

I've never been confident in front of a camera. I'm always sure I will look awkward, stiff, and not at all how I think I look in my head. But Monique and Amanda took the pressure off by helping me pose and they are so fun to work with it was easy to stay loose and relaxed.

Has your pregnancy gone pretty smoothly or has it been a tough one?

I feel this pregnancy has been easier emotionally but tougher physically mostly due to the fact that I'm already raising a toddler. She keeps me distracted and moving. I feel a little guilty that I haven't been giving this second pregnancy the notice it deserves so this shoot was a nice way to give it some undivided attention
