October Family of the Month
I love to feature some of the wonderful people I get to meet, and this month I had the pleasure of meeting Rowan and his family on his 1st birthday. We had a wonderful morning at Bothell Landing and I asked Stephanie to tell us a little about her family.
What's your favorite family activity?
We love the outdoors-parks, sitting outside to watch the planes go by or see the moon, bird watching, going for walks
Who are the members of your family and tell me a quick fact about each person.
- Stephanie (mom) originally from Michigan and loves to cook, knit and travel
- Jeremy (dad) from upstate N.Y. loves snowboarding, soccer and brewing his own beer
- Rowan (1st child) is Mr. Smiley. He loves all things music like conducting or dancing, even to the Jeopardy final question theme song, the outdoors and his fur brother, Tucker
- Grandpa and Grandma K live in Michigan and came out to celebrate his first birthday. They love to travel, go wine tasting, and volunteer their time for various causes
Tell me about your favorite parts of our session, or why you enjoyed the session.
It was very natural, go with the flow. if he needed a break to nurse, we did. If grandma had to hold him and look at the ducks rather than pose for pictures on the bridge, we did. Some of the best photos weren't the scripted ones but the ones that just happened to come about for whatever reason. He loves to pick flowers, so as we walked by a garden and he saw them, we stopped to smell and pick flowers
Tell me about the outfits you wore to the shoot (where you bought them, why you chose them, etc.)
Monique said neutral colors based on the background of the shoot...lots of greens which are darker so tried to keep them neutral and brighten it up with a yellow sundress from kohl's, khaki shorts and white button shirt for the little one (hand me downs), and a white collared shirt w khakis for daddy-just happened to have this which allowed us to match without being too matchy-matchy...the yellow stripe to go with mom's dress and the white and khaki kiddo had on. We had lots of cute outfits for Rowan, but in the end most of them had a print or writing that I thought down the road, is that what we want to look at forever? While not super formal pics, I didn't want them too clashy with the background either. Business casual worked for us.
What props did you bring and why?
The number 1 balloon and a wooden #1 to celebrate his 1st birthday. Foam shapes that we used to put our heads in to look like giant picture frames...it was a favorite activity of his at home at this age, a nice way to remember one of his "hobbies"while little
What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a family session?
Don't stress too much. If your kids need to eat, let them eat. If they need to shake their sillies out, let them. Maybe those will turn into some really fun photos! No need to buy new clothes, find some nice basics that work for all
Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? If so, what were the worries?
Just the weather, but even if it rained I'm sure we could have made it work with jackets and umbrellas instead
